This Green Valley backyard redesign turned a plain, rock-covered yard in Henderson, Nevada, into an organized outdoor space with a paver patio, connecting walkways, artificial turf, and decorative landscape rock. Chicago Landscape of Las Vegas planned the backyard and side-yard improvements together, giving the property a consistent look from the side access to the rear patio.
The starting point was simple: graded ground and rock, with no finished landscape layout across the backyard. The new design introduced clear places to walk, enjoy the patio, and appreciate the contrast between green turf and desert stone. It is a water-smart approach to outdoor living that adds the appearance of lawn without installing natural grass.

- Paving: Landscape pavers for the patio and backyard and side-yard walkways
- Green space: Two defined artificial-turf areas
- Finishing materials: Decorative landscape rock with contrasting colors and larger stone accents
Before: A Yard Ready for a Complete Layout
The before photos show the scale of the opportunity. Behind the home, an open stretch of unfinished ground extended from the covered patio toward the perimeter wall. The side passage also needed to be incorporated into the landscape plan.
Although the yard offered plenty of space, its surfaces did little to define how that space could be used. A successful redesign needed more than a new finish spread across the ground. It needed a layout that connected the house, patio, walkways, and open areas.
Our landscape design and planning approach brings those decisions together. For this project, the combination of pavers, turf, and rock established a simple material palette that could carry through the entire yard.

During: Framing the New Backyard Design
We began by laying out and framing the new areas. The construction photos show the crew defining the edges and preparing the spaces that would become part of the finished landscape. At this stage, the relationship between the turf sections and the surrounding surfaces started to take shape.
Working from a complete layout helped give each material a clear role. The pavers created finished walking and patio surfaces. Artificial turf introduced green areas beside the patio. Landscape rock would fill the surrounding spaces and connect those features visually.
The progress photos also capture an important part of the transformation: a yard can look very different between the framing stage and the final installation. Exposed base material, tools, and unfinished edges gradually give way to the clean divisions visible in the completed project.

Paver Patio and Walkways Connect the Space
Landscape pavers form the foundation of the new patio and walkway design. Their blend of warm and gray tones complements the home’s stucco exterior and the surrounding block walls. Along the house, the finished paving gives the covered patio a more defined surface.
In the backyard, a sequence of rectangular paver pads creates a distinct route through the landscape rock. The gaps between the pads keep the path visually connected to the stone around it, while the repeating shapes add structure to the open yard.
The project also included walkway improvements along the side of the yard. Considering side access alongside the main patio helps make a backyard redesign feel complete, rather than ending the design at the rear of the house.

Artificial Turf Adds Green to the Desert Palette
Two defined artificial-turf areas give this Green Valley backyard redesign its strongest color contrast. Their simple shapes sit alongside the pavers and pale landscape rock, creating green sections that stand out without covering the whole yard.
Artificial turf provides a lawn-like appearance without the routine irrigation, mowing, and fertilizing needed to grow natural grass. For this property, it allowed us to add green space while keeping the overall design focused on water-smart materials.
The turf is part of a balanced layout: it provides color, the pavers provide finished hardscape, and the rock connects the spaces. Together, those materials make the yard more inviting while keeping its appearance straightforward and organized.
Landscape Rock Completes the Transformation
Decorative rock brings texture and contrast to the finished backyard. Light-colored stone surrounds the turf and paver pads, while a contrasting reddish rock bed follows the rear portion of the property. Larger stones add variation within that bed.
The difference in color helps break up the yard’s broad footprint. Close to the patio, the pale rock sets off the green turf and darker paving. Farther back, the reddish stone creates a separate visual feature against the perimeter wall.
Rock also carries the landscape treatment into the side passage. The finished side-yard photo shows a neat stone surface around the gate and along the home. Learn more about our landscape rock installation services.
A Water-Smart Landscape Built from a Rock-Covered Starting Point
This project added a finished landscape to a yard that already lacked a natural lawn. Its water-smart value comes from the choice of materials: pavers, decorative rock, and artificial turf create a usable design without adding a conventional lawn and its ongoing irrigation needs.
That makes it a useful example for Henderson homeowners who want to improve an unfinished yard while keeping water use in mind. Our desert landscaping services can help bring those priorities into the planning process.

The Finished Green Valley Backyard Redesign
The completed landscape has a clear arrangement: a paver patio at the house, green turf areas, a repeating paver path, and contrasting rock beds. Each feature has its own place, yet the shared materials bring the backyard and side yard together.
From the before photos to the finished views, the change is easy to see. What began as a broad expanse of unfinished ground and rock now has defined surfaces, color, and a complete landscape layout.
