Project Scope
The complete backyard renovation included:
- Removal of all existing grass

Starting With a Clean Slate
The first stage of the project was complete demolition and site preparation. Existing grass, irrigation, patios, walkways, trees, shrubs, and other landscape materials were removed so the new backyard could be designed without limitations imposed by the previous layout.
Starting from a cleared site also gave our team the opportunity to establish proper elevations and prepare the property for the new hardscape, planting areas, artificial turf, putting green, and irrigation system.
Building the Raised Planting Beds
Once the site was prepared, construction began on the new raised planting areas. Brick was used to create defined planting beds that add elevation, texture, and architectural structure to the backyard.
The raised beds helped break up the large outdoor space while providing dedicated areas for drought-tolerant trees, shrubs, and plants. They also create an attractive transition between the hardscape, turf, and decorative rock areas.
Installing the New Paver Patio and Walkways
The next major phase was installation of the new paver patio and connecting walkways.
The pavers establish the primary circulation pattern through the backyard and visually connect the home’s outdoor living areas with the putting green, artificial turf, and landscaped planting beds. Their color and texture complement the desert landscape while giving the finished yard a polished, custom appearance.
Creating the Custom Putting Green
One of the signature features of this Las Vegas backyard redesign is the oversized custom putting green. Before turf installation could begin, our team created the raised and contoured areas that would define the green.
The putting green was engineered to provide a realistic playing experience while maintaining the durability required for a permanent outdoor installation in the Southern Nevada climate.
The system was constructed using professional synthetic turf installation practices and technical criteria associated with high-performance putting surfaces, including proper base preparation, drainage and permeability, turf stability, seam integrity, and durability.
The finished green provides a large dedicated practice area while also functioning as one of the backyard’s most visually impressive landscape features.
Artificial Turf Installation
After the putting green base and surrounding landscape areas were prepared, installation of the artificial turf began.
Artificial turf provides the appearance and comfort of a green lawn without the irrigation, mowing, fertilization, or seasonal maintenance required by natural grass. Used alongside decorative rock and drought-tolerant landscaping, it creates an excellent balance between lush green space and desert water efficiency.
A Completely New Irrigation System
Because the original irrigation system was removed during demolition, Chicago Landscape installed a new irrigation system specifically designed around the new landscape.
Rather than adapting an older system to an entirely different backyard layout, the new irrigation zones could be planned around the actual water requirements of the trees, shrubs, plants, and raised beds.
This provides more efficient water delivery and gives the new landscape a much stronger foundation for long-term plant health.
Drought-Friendly Trees, Shrubs and Plants
The planting design incorporates numerous drought-friendly trees, bushes, and plants selected to perform well in the Las Vegas climate.
By combining plant material with different heights, forms, textures, and colors, the finished landscape feels lush and established without relying on a traditional water-intensive lawn.
Decorative landscape rock surrounds the planting areas, providing a clean desert appearance while visually tying together the raised beds, pavers, artificial turf, and putting green.
The Finished Backyard Transformation
The completed project is dramatically different from the backyard that existed when construction began.
The oversized putting green creates an impressive recreational centerpiece. Artificial turf provides additional usable green space, while the paver patio and walkways define the outdoor living areas and provide attractive connections throughout the property.
The raised brick planting beds add depth and architectural interest, while drought-friendly trees, shrubs, plants, and decorative rock soften the hardscape and give the backyard a finished desert landscape appearance.
The result is a backyard that combines recreation, outdoor living, water efficiency, and professional landscape design into one cohesive environment.
